Here’s a little secret the skincare aisle doesn’t want you to know: body lotion is one of the easiest things you can make at home. Like, “why have I been paying $28 for this” easy.
And here’s my other confession: I’ve become one of those women who reads ingredient labels in the store like it’s a mystery novel. Because somewhere in my fifties I realized that anti-aging skincare shouldn’t stop at your chin — the skin on your arms, legs, and décolletage ages too, and it deserves better than whatever’s on sale with fragrance as the second ingredient.
So today we’re making a real DIY body lotion — silky, pumpable-ish, absorbs beautifully — plus three variations: one for seriously dry skin, one firming anti-aging version loaded with skin-loving oils, and a whipped tallow option for my crunchy girls. Let’s get into it.
Body Butter vs. Body Lotion (Yes, There’s a Difference)
If you’ve made my whipped body butter, you know it’s rich, thick, and oil-based. A lotion is different — it’s an emulsion of oil AND water, which makes it lighter, faster-absorbing, and much closer to what you buy at the store. The water is also why we need one extra ingredient (emulsifying wax) and why homemade lotion has a shorter shelf life. Worth it? Completely.
The Base DIY Body Lotion Recipe
Makes about 8 oz.
Ingredients:
- ½ cup distilled water (must be distilled — tap water shortens shelf life)
- ¼ cup sweet almond oil (or jojoba for lighter feel)
- 2 tablespoons shea butter
- 1½ tablespoons emulsifying wax (this is the non-negotiable — it’s what binds oil and water into lotion; find it online or at soap-supply shops)
- 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil (skin-loving AND helps freshness)
- 10–15 drops essential oil of choice (lavender and vanilla is my forever combo)
- Optional but smart: a broad-spectrum natural preservative used per its label directions if you want it to last more than a couple of weeks outside the fridge
Instructions:
- Heat the oil phase. In a heat-safe glass measuring cup, combine the almond oil, shea butter, and emulsifying wax. Set the cup in a saucepan with a couple inches of simmering water until fully melted.
- Heat the water phase. Warm the distilled water in a second cup the same way. Both phases should be warm at roughly the same temperature — this is the secret to a smooth emulsion.
- Combine and blend. Slowly pour the water into the oil mixture while blending with an immersion blender or hand mixer. It’ll turn milky, then creamy — like magic, but chemistry.
- Blend in bursts as it cools, every few minutes for 10–15 minutes, until it’s thick and lotion-like.
- Add extras. Once it’s below lukewarm, blend in the vitamin E, essential oils, and preservative if using.
- Jar it up. Spoon into a clean 8 oz pump bottle or jar.
Shelf life: with a preservative, a few months. Without one, keep it in the fridge and use within 1–2 weeks — water-based DIY products can grow bacteria, and nobody’s glowing skin is worth that. Always use clean hands or a pump.
Variation 1: Extra-Hydrating for Dry Skin
For scaly shins and desert-dry winter skin:
- Swap the sweet almond oil for avocado oil (richer, deeply moisturizing)
- Add 1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin to the water phase — it’s a humectant that pulls moisture into your skin
- Apply within 3 minutes of showering, while skin is damp. This one trick doubles any lotion’s power. (In summer, I follow with a few drops of my glowy body oil on shins and shoulders.)
Variation 2: Firming Anti-Aging Body Lotion
This is the one I make for myself. Same base recipe, with upgrades aimed at elasticity, crepey skin, and glow:
- Swap half the almond oil for rosehip seed oil — beloved for skin tone, texture, and fine lines
- Add 5 drops frankincense essential oil — the classic anti-aging oil for a reason
- Add 1 teaspoon extra vitamin E
- Optional: 3 drops geranium essential oil for skin-toning support (and it smells like a fancy spa)
Massage it upward — arms, chest, neck — with a little intention. Is the massage half the benefit? Possibly. Do I care? No. Consistency and daily moisture are genuinely the best things you can do for aging body skin, and this makes both a pleasure.
Honest note: no lotion, homemade or $90, will “erase” aging — and anyone promising that is selling something. What great daily moisture DOES do is improve texture, plumpness, and that healthy-glow look, which is most of what we’re after anyway.
Variation 3: Whipped Tallow Body Lotion
For my ancestral-skincare girlies — tallow is having a MOMENT (if you’ve tried my DIY tallow soap, you already know), and it’s wonderful for very dry or sensitive skin:
- Replace the shea butter with 2 tablespoons rendered grass-fed tallow
- Keep everything else the same
- Expect a slightly richer, more balm-like lotion — the tallow version is beautiful as a night-time leg-and-elbow treatment
Tips for Lotion Success
- Temperature matters most. If your two phases are wildly different temperatures when you combine them, the emulsion can break (separate). Warm and warm = smooth and creamy.
- If it separates, re-warm gently and re-blend. Usually saveable.
- Sanitize everything — jars, blender, spoons. Water-based recipes demand clean tools.
- Label with the date. Future you will not remember.
- Patch test any new recipe on your inner arm, especially with essential oils.

DIY Body Lotion Recipe: FAQs
Not a true lotion — without an emulsifier, oil and water separate. If you don’t want to buy e-wax, make my whipped body butter or solid lotion bars instead — both are all-oil, no emulsifier needed.
Anything containing water can grow bacteria and mold. A broad-spectrum preservative (used per the label) makes your lotion shelf-stable; skipping it means fridge storage and a 1–2 week window.
The firming variation is built for it — rosehip, frankincense, and vitamin E are among the best-loved natural ingredients for mature skin, and daily moisture itself improves how skin looks and feels.
It’s formulated for the body. For your face, see my DIY anti-aging face serum and DIY face toner instead.
Sweet almond for all-purpose, jojoba for lighter/non-greasy, avocado for very dry skin, and rosehip for the anti-aging boost.
