There’s something about an earthy bedroom that instantly feels more relaxing…. am I right?
Maybe it’s the warm colors, the natural materials, or the fact that these rooms tend to look a little less perfect and a lot more livable.
And earthy definitely doesn’t have to mean an all-beige room filled with baskets and pampas grass.
Some of my favorite earthy bedrooms are actually quite colorful. Think deep olive green, dusty blue, clay, muted terracotta, chocolate brown and mushroom mixed with warm woods, creamy linen and pieces that look like they’ve been collected over time.
The trick is keeping the colors grounded and slightly muted rather than bright or overly saturated.
Below, I’ve pulled together some of my favorite earthy bedroom ideas, from light and neutral to dark and moody, along with easy ways to recreate the look in your own bedroom.
What Makes a Bedroom Feel Earthy?
Before we jump into the rooms, there are a few things you’ll notice again and again. Earthy bedrooms usually rely less on a specific decorating style and more on color, texture and materials. That means you can create an earthy bedroom that’s modern, boho, rustic, vintage-inspired or even fairly minimalist.
A few elements make the biggest difference:
- Grounded colors: olive, clay, mushroom, brown, rust, terracotta, cream and muted blue
- Natural materials: linen, cotton, wool, jute, wood, rattan and aged metals
- Lots of texture: rumpled bedding, woven rugs, plaster walls and imperfect wood
- Warm woods: especially medium and darker woods rather than pale gray finishes
- Soft contrast: cream instead of stark white and charcoal or brown instead of harsh black
- A little imperfection: bedding doesn’t need to be perfectly tucked and every piece doesn’t need to match
That last one is important. The best earthy bedrooms feel like someone actually lives there.
Start With a Dark Earthy Green Bedroom
Dark olive or forest green is one of my favorite ways to create an earthy bedroom without relying entirely on brown and beige.
The green acts almost like a neutral when it’s sufficiently muted. Pair it with an extremely low-profile bed, natural linen bedding, warm wood and a few camel or tobacco-colored accents.
And don’t overdecorate it. A dark wall color already provides plenty of visual interest.
Layer Olive Green With Warm Terracotta
Olive and terracotta are natural partners because both colors have warm, earthy undertones. Rather than splitting them 50/50, let one color dominate. Here, muted olive creates the backdrop while smaller doses of faded terracotta warm up the bedding.
I especially like bringing in something unexpected above the bed — a framed textile, vintage fabric or woven piece can feel much more collected than another piece of mass-produced wall art.
Go Dark and Cozy With Rust-Colored Linen
If you love a dark earthy bedroom, this is such a good example of how to do it without making the room feel heavy. Washed rust bedding brings warmth to deep walls, while woven shades, aged wood and a vintage-style rug add texture.
Notice that nothing needs to match perfectly. In fact, this look gets better when it doesn’t.
Keep an Earthy Bedroom Low and Minimal
One trend I’m loving right now is the almost-on-the-floor bed. A very low platform instantly makes a bedroom feel more casual and modern. Pair it with oversized, slightly rumpled bedding rather than a perfectly tailored duvet.
A live-edge wood shelf above the bed adds warmth without taking up floor space, while a tiny bit of muted terracotta keeps a neutral palette from becoming flat.
Mix Dusty Blue-Green With Earthy Neutrals
Blue may not be the first color you think of when you hear “earthy,” but dusty, grayish-green toned blues work beautifully with natural materials.
The key is avoiding crisp coastal blue and white. Instead, combine faded blue-green linen with putty-colored walls, jute, aged wood and just a little blush terracotta. The result feels softer and much more organic.

Warm Up a Neutral Bedroom With Muted Terracotta
You don’t have to paint the walls to create an earthy bedroom color scheme. Here, creamy walls essentially disappear into the background while layers of muted terracotta, flax and oatmeal do the work.
This is also an easy look to recreate without redecorating an entire bedroom. Change the duvet, add a textured throw and bring in one or two warm-toned pillows.
Create a Modern Earthy Bedroom With Olive
For a more modern earthy bedroom, simplify the palette.
Muted olive bedding, warm cream walls and natural wood give this room plenty of color without making it busy. A simple abstract landscape continues the palette rather than introducing a completely new color story. And those old divided-pane windows add something that brand-new furnishings simply can’t: character.
TIP: If your house doesn’t have architectural character, you don’t have to fake an old house. Bring some age in through a vintage nightstand, old wood stool, antique mirror or slightly worn rug instead.
Go Light With Creamy Earthy Neutrals
An earthy neutral bedroom doesn’t have to be fifty shades of beige. The trick is creating contrast through materials instead of color. Mix ivory linen, warm cream, natural jute, aged wood and a slightly deeper mushroom or taupe.
And instead of automatically hanging artwork over the bed, try a vintage mirror. It’s an easy way to break up all of the soft textile surfaces.

Try Chocolate Brown for a Moody Earthy Bedroom
Brown is officially interesting again. Deep chocolate or coffee-colored walls create an incredibly cozy backdrop for cream bedding and natural wood. The oversized woven mirror keeps the dark wall from feeling too serious while reinforcing the natural-material palette.
This is also a good example of why earthy doesn’t necessarily mean boho. The same colors can feel surprisingly tailored depending on the furniture and accessories you choose.
If you love the mirror in this bedroom, here is a (slightly) similar option we found online:
Bring In Dark Clay Walls
Clay sits somewhere between terracotta, brown and muted red, which makes it one of the richest colors for an earthy bedroom. If you’re using it across all four walls, keep the rest of the room quieter. A very low bed, fluffy cream bedding and simple pale artwork provide enough contrast without competing with the wall color.
For a less dramatic version, use clay on just one wall or introduce it through bedding instead.
Build a Warm Mushroom Bedroom Around Texture
Mushroom is perfect if beige feels too pale but brown feels too dark. It’s warmer and earthier than traditional greige and works beautifully with camel, cream, walnut and faded charcoal.
In this room, the patterned woven rug does most of the decorating. Because the rug already introduces pattern and several shades of brown, everything around it can stay fairly simple.
Bring that earthy aesthetic to your space.

Dark Earthy Bedroom with Deep Green Walls
Deep green walls give this dark earthy bedroom a rich, cocooning feel, while relaxed cream bedding and muted terracotta keep it warm and inviting. Layered green pillows, a softly patterned accent pillow, vintage-style rug, abstract artwork, and aged architectural details make the room feel collected and lived in rather than overly decorated.
Dark Earthy Bedroom with a Pop of Soft Terracotta
Nearly black-green walls make this earthy bedroom feel moody without losing its warmth. Relaxed ivory bedding lightens the room, while a single muted terracotta pillow and faded vintage rug introduce just enough earthy color. The worn painted door, simple botanical artwork, aged wood floors, and low bed give the space an unfussy, lived-in quality that feels especially at home in an older house.
Warm Earthy Bedroom with Ochre and Dusty Blue
Warm ochre walls set the tone for this moodier take on an earthy bedroom, balanced by dusty blue, cream, tobacco brown, and muted gold accents. Rumpled linen bedding, a faded vintage-style rug, imperfect walls, and loosely arranged branches give the space an older, collected character while the unexpected blue pillow keeps all those warm earth tones feeling fresh.
Neutral Earthy Bedroom with Dusty Blue Accents
Soft oatmeal linens and warm natural wood create a quiet, earthy foundation in this relaxed bedroom, while the oversized dusty blue lumbar pillow adds just enough color to keep the neutrals interesting. The low-profile platform bed, woven pendant, textured artwork, chunky knit throw, and Moroccan-style rug layer in organic texture without making the room feel overly decorated.
Matte Black Earthy Bedroom With Warm Wood and Jute
Matte black walls create a dramatic backdrop in this dark earthy bedroom, while the ultra-low rustic wood bed keeps the space feeling relaxed and grounded. Creamy rumpled bedding and layers of warm brown soften the darker palette, while the oversized woven mirror and black-and-natural jute rug bring in plenty of organic texture. The mix of aged wood, woven fibers and warm neutrals keeps the room cozy and earthy rather than stark or overly modern.
Earthy Vintage Bedroom With Collected Old-Home Charm
This earthy vintage bedroom blends old-house character with warm, organic color and texture. The vintage iron bed, thrifted wood dresser and bench, faded patterned rug, and petite botanical artwork give the room a collected-over-time feel, while deep olive on the ceiling, trim, and door adds an unexpected layer of color against the creamy walls.
Dark Green Earthy Bedroom With Warm Mustard & Aged Brass
Deep green walls give this earthy bedroom a cozy, grounded feel, while creamy linen bedding keeps the darker palette from becoming too heavy. Muted mustard and olive pillows add warmth, and the vintage-style rug, aged brass lighting, natural wood, and oversized abstract artwork make the room feel layered and collected. It’s a great example of how a dark earthy bedroom can still feel warm, inviting, and relaxed rather than overly moody.
Earthy Olive Green Bedroom with Terracotta Decor
Deep olive green walls create a warm, enveloping backdrop for this earthy bedroom, while muted terracotta, flax linen, and a richly patterned vintage rug bring in softer layers of color. The low-profile bed, oversized abstract art, aged wood floors, and wonderfully imperfect old door give the room that collected-over-time character that keeps earthy decor from feeling too polished.
Earthy Bedroom Color Ideas
| If you want… | Start with | Add |
|---|---|---|
| Light + organic | Cream + mushroom | Camel + warm wood |
| Warm + cozy | Terracotta + oatmeal | Olive + walnut |
| Dark + moody | Chocolate brown | Cream + tobacco |
| Natural + colorful | Olive green | Rust + flax |
| Soft + relaxed | Dusty blue | Putty + terracotta |
| Rich + dramatic | Dark clay | Ivory + aged wood |
Quick note: You don’t need to use every color in the palette equally. In fact, most earthy rooms look better when one color clearly dominates, a second supports it and the remaining colors appear only in small accents.
How to Make an Earthy Bedroom Look Collected — Not Themed
An earthy bedroom can go wrong surprisingly quickly. Too much rattan, pampas grass, macramé and terracotta and suddenly you’ve created a theme instead of a room. I’d recommend choosing natural materials because you genuinely like them rather than trying to check every “earthy” box.
Mix old and new. Don’t buy the matching bedroom set. Let your wood tones vary slightly. Use one beautiful woven piece rather than five. And leave a little empty space.
Most importantly, don’t style every surface.
A lamp and a book on a nightstand often look better than a lamp, three books, a bowl, a candle, a vase, a plant and a decorative chain. That lived-in restraint is what gives these bedrooms the relaxed look we’re after.
How to Make Your Bedroom Feel Earthy Without Redecorating Everything
And this is where we give the reader an inexpensive way in. If you already have a fairly neutral bedroom, you can change the feel considerably without replacing the furniture.
Start with the textiles.
Swap crisp bedding for washed linen or cotton. Add a jute, wool or faded patterned rug. Replace one or two decorative pillows with olive, rust, mushroom or clay. Bring in a warm wood stool or nightstand.
Then look at your lighting.
A ceramic, wood or aged-brass lamp with a warm bulb can completely change the mood of the room at night.
Finally, remove something. Earthy rooms generally feel better when there’s room for the materials and textures to breathe.
Earthy Bedroom Decor: FAQs
Olive green, warm brown, mushroom, cream, clay, terracotta, rust and muted blue all work beautifully. Look for colors with warm, gray or brown undertones rather than highly saturated shades.
Absolutely. Combine warm white or cream with mushroom, oatmeal, jute and natural wood. The variety of textures keeps a light neutral bedroom from feeling flat.
Start with textiles and secondhand pieces. A textured throw, new pillow covers, a vintage wood nightstand or stool, and a woven rug can make a much bigger difference than replacing an entire bedroom set. Vintage wins every time in an earthy space, but there are also some amazing options for rugs and wall decor on sites like Amazon or Wayfair.
They can overlap, but they’re not the same style. “Earthy” describes the palette and materials more than a specific decorating style. You can have an earthy modern, minimalist, vintage, rustic or boho bedroom.
