Mint green tile with black trim, walnut vanities, avocado green, funky geometric wallpaper, and color combinations that would probably make a minimalist nervous. Vintage bathrooms certainly had personality!
For this collection, I wanted to borrow some of my favorite design details from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s and give them a fresh spin. Think original-looking seafoam tile paired with updated fixtures, mid-century modern vanities, playful wallpaper, and a few unexpected colors thrown into the mix.
Some of these retro green bathroom ideas are sweet and nostalgic, while others are bold, colorful, and a little outrageous. We’ve played with everything from soft mint and butter yellow to olive green, burnt orange, chartreuse, and cobalt blue.
And after seeing how these combinations came together, I’m convinced vintage bathrooms deserve a lot more credit for their creativity.
Now let’s get into the fun stuff.

One of my favorite things about older bathrooms is the tile. Those soft seafoam greens, mint greens, and even avocado-colored tiles have so much personality, especially when they’re paired with contrasting trim or classic mosaic floors. And if you’re lucky enough to have original vintage bathroom tile that’s still in good condition, I’d seriously consider working with it rather than tearing it out.
These bathrooms show how beautiful vintage-inspired green tile can look with updated vanities, warm wood, brass fixtures, and a few carefully chosen accessories.

Funky Retro Bathroom Wallpaper Ideas
If there’s one place where I think you can have a little fun with wallpaper, it’s the bathroom. Oversized florals, repeating geometric shapes, abstract patterns, and those wonderfully groovy 1970s designs can completely transform an otherwise ordinary space.
One of my favorite looks is a simple wood or painted vanity against a bold patterned wall. Add a round mirror and a pair of retro sconces, and honestly, you don’t need much else. For a smaller bathroom or powder room, wallpaper can be especially effective because you can create a big impact without changing the layout or replacing all the fixtures.

How to Give Your Bathroom a Retro Look Without a Full Remodel
You don’t necessarily need a major renovation to bring a little vintage personality into your bathroom. A few changes can make a surprisingly big difference:
- Try a funky wallpaper. Geometric prints, oversized florals, and abstract patterns can instantly give a bathroom a 1960s or 1970s feel.
- Paint the vanity. Olive, avocado, mustard yellow, and even chartreuse can turn a basic cabinet into something memorable.
- Swap the mirror and lighting. Round mirrors, globe sconces, and warm brass finishes are easy ways to introduce a mid-century look.
- Bring in retro artwork. Look for colorful abstract prints, bold botanicals, and geometric designs.
- Work with existing tile. If your bathroom already has vintage green, pink, or yellow tile, try building your color palette around it.
- Mix old and new. A vintage dresser-style vanity paired with modern plumbing fixtures can feel much more interesting than a completely matching bathroom set.
And don’t feel like everything has to come from the same decade. Some of the most interesting bathrooms mix 1950s tile, 1970s colors, and modern fixtures.
Final Thoughts
I think what I love most about these retro green bathrooms is that none of them take themselves too seriously.
There’s room for avocado green, crazy wallpaper, mustard yellow vanities, funky tile, and color combinations that might sound a little questionable until you actually see them together.
And you don’t have to go all-in on the 1970s to have fun with the look. Sometimes all it takes is one fabulous wallpaper, an unexpected paint color, or a vintage-inspired vanity to give your bathroom a completely different personality.
