How to Make a DIY Coffee-Scented Candle (Step-by-Step)
1. Prep Your Container
Start by cleaning your jar or mug so the wax sticks properly.
Attach your wick to the bottom using:
- A wick sticker, or
- A small drop of hot glue
Use a pencil or wick holder to keep it centered.
Pro Tip: If using wood wicks, place two together for a stronger crackle.
2. Melt Your Wax
Pour your soy wax flakes into your metal pitcher.
Place the pitcher inside a pot of simmering water (double-boiler method).
Heat until fully melted — around 170–180°F.
Stir gently so the wax melts evenly.
3. Add the Coffee Scent
Once melted, remove from heat and let cool to about 150°F.
Then add:
- Coffee fragrance oil (1 oz per pound of wax)
- Optional: a few drops of vanilla for a latte vibe
- Optional: brown mica powder for a creamy coffee color
Stir for a full minute so the fragrance binds to the wax.
Scent Tip: Using real coffee grounds in the wax can cause burning — stick to fragrance oil and use whole beans only on top of your candle.
4. Pour the Candle
Pour the scented wax slowly into your container, leaving about ½ inch at the top.
Stop halfway, add a few whole coffee beans along the edges for aesthetic purposes, then continue pouring.
Don’t overfill with beans—they’re decorative, not functional.
Let it sit undisturbed.
5. Add Decorative Coffee Beans
Before the wax fully sets (about 10–20 minutes after pouring), sprinkle a few coffee beans gently on the surface.
This makes the candle look like it came straight from a high-end boutique.
Important Tip: Don’t add too many beans — you want the wax to grip them firmly so they don’t loosen later. I typically add about 5 or 6 to the top, depending on the type of candle jar I’m using.
6. Let It Set
Allow your candle to cool completely for several hours.
Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before lighting.
The scent will deepen over the next 24 hours, so let it “cure” if you want maximum coffee-shop aroma.
Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Coffee Candle
- Use soy wax — it burns slow, clean, and holds fragrance beautifully.
- Wood wicks crackle and give serious “cozy café vibes.”
- Heat the jar slightly before pouring to reduce frosting (the white coating on wax).
- Don’t add coffee grounds to the wax — they sink, burn, and look messy.
- Double-scent for strong throw: Mix coffee + vanilla + a drop of chocolate oil.
- Add a label or twine wrap for a boutique-style finish.
- These make AMAZING gifts — teachers, neighbors, anyone who lives on caffeine.
